Power Factor (PF) Correction in the Industrial Sector

Content Editor

As part of ADDC's continuous efforts to improve energy consumption efficiency and to reduce carbon footprints in the industrial sector in Abu Dhabi, we have recently launched the "Power Factor Correction" campaign. This campaign is being undertaken to highlight the obligation placed upon industrial consumers to maintain their Power Factor (PF) between 0.9 and unity, (one), as per the Electricity Wiring Regulations issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy.

Maintaining a PF of close to one reduces electricity consumption, increases the capacity of distribution network components such as cables and transformers, increases the efficiency and lifetime of equipment such as motors, reduces electricity losses in internal networks and also reduces carbon footprints.

A higher PF can be achieved by installing appropriate PF correction capacitor banks as close to the loads as feasible, and maintaining them in working order. The PF can be monitored via a proper metering facility to ensure that it remains above 0.9.

The monthly energy bill format for industrial customers now includes the Active Power, Reactive Power and Power Factor parameters.
