Rates and tariffs 2016

The type of business that you operate will determine the rate you pay for your water and electricity. Because Abu Dhabi has a diverse economy, with many sectors demanding different usage and service levels, we’ve developed a set tariff for each type of customer: government, commerce, agriculture, industry and large industry.

Subsidy matters

With the exception of government departments, our business customers benefit from tariffs that are subsidised by the Abu Dhabi Government. Subsidised tariffs make the emirate an attractive place for new enterprises to consider investing capital. This obviously has long-term benefits for the local economy, too.

Off-peak efficiency

As well as helping to attract new business to the region’s economy, it’s also important to make sure that our resources are used efficiently. We need to keep things in balance, both to protect our environment from harmful overconsumption, and to make sure there’s always enough supply of water and electricity to service all of our customers.

With this in mind, when demand for electricity is at its highest during daylight hours in summer, large industrial operators – with over 1 MW connected load – are charged at a higher-cost, peak tariff. This encourages greater demand during night hours and helps to keep things flowing throughout the daytime.

Business types

Each business operating in the emirate is classified under one of the following categories:

Government - All federal and local Abu Dhabi Government departments.

Commercial - Commercial enterprises licenced by the Department of Economic Development or one of the free zone authorities, and other organisations such as embassies, schools, hospitals, sports clubs, commercial farms and fisheries.

Agricultural - Private, non-commercial farms and ranches used for agricultural purposes.

Industrial - Industrial enterprises licenced by Industrial Development Bureau or Higher Corporation for Specialised Economic Zones (ZonesCorp). These customers are further divided into two categories: light industrial (below 1MW of connected load) and heavy industrial.
